  • It is a normal practice to load a bigger bitmap and then use parts of it when drawing (sometimes called an atlas).I'm not familiar with.msstyles specifically, but assuming that you have the meta-data necessary to determine where each element is located within the bitmap, you can draw just that part using GDI functions like BitBlt, StretchBlt or AlphaBlend.
  • There is still no way to edit the table yet because it might be located in a.mui file which i can indirectly read by opening the.msstyles file, but not write. Loading the.mui manually creates conceptional challenges which I don't want to tackle right now. So to add or change font entries, the use of a PE resource editor is still necessary.

Import the msstyles from Stylebuilder and save the files in a folder. In the folder you'll see all the bitmaps and all the.ini. To modify color and text and font etc go to the.ini's.

Step 1: Try Different Software Programs

If you can’t open MSSTYLES files, you may not have the right program installed on your computer. You can start by installing some of the most common programs associated with MSSTYLES files. The primary software associated with MSSTYLES files is Windows XP Visual Style. You can download one of these programs from the developer’s website.

Step 2: Use the File Type as a Hint

If you know the type of file you’re working with, that might help you figure out how to open it. MSSTYLES files are usually System Files. Look for a program on your computer that opens this type of file, and see if it will open the MSSTYLES file.

If you’re not sure of the file type, you can find it within the MSSTYLES file itself. Follow the steps below to find this information.

On a Windows Computer:
  1. Right-click the file icon.
  2. Select “Properties” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Find the file type listed under “Type of File”.
On a Mac:
  1. Right-click on the file icon.
  2. Select “More Info” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Look for the file type listed under “Kind”.

Step 3: Ask a Developer

If you’re still having trouble opening your MSSTYLES file, a software developer may be able to help. If you know which software program should open your file, contact the developer who created that program. If you’re not sure which program to use, consult the list below to find the developers for the most common programs associated with MSSTYLES files:

Windows XP Visual StyleMicrosoft Corporation

Step 4: Use a Universal File Viewer

If the above steps don’t help, a universal file viewer like File Magic (Download) might be able to help you open your MSSTYLES file. Universal file viewers can open a variety of file types, depending on the format. Just remember that some files are incompatible and will only open in binary format.
