A single academic license can be used only by one department at an educational institution in one physical location. Access to students and faculty outside of the adopting department must be restricted. If two departments within a college or equivalent both obtain a license of the same type, then F-Chart Software will provide a license for the whole college of engineering or equivalent. An Academic license is for instructional use only. A separate non-academic license is required if the product is used for sponsored research or other activities that are not part of a student's graduation requirement. Thesis research that is directly related to an advanced degree is considered an academic activity and it is allowed under the license agreement.

The program may be installed on computers owned by the department and on personal computers owned by students and faculty in the department. The setup, EES application and license files must not be accessible to persons who are not affiliated with the adopting department(s).

Academic licenses require an internet connection having an IP address that maps to the University. The public IP address range for the adopting department will need to be submitted with an Academic license order. Academic Update Service
Up to and including the 2019-2020 Academic version, the EES program expired on September 1 of the following year. As a result, it had been necessary for academic departments to replace their existing EES programs each year with a newer version that was made available at no cost. The version that was released in June, 2020 will not expire and it is no longer necessary to replace the program. Free access to our website to download the EES setup program ended on September 1, 2020. Access to the setup program for the current Academic version and technical support are only available with a annual subscription to the Academic Update Service (AUS). Technical suppport includes changing/adding IP addresses for the license, in addition to services related to the program operation. The cost of this optional service is $500 per year for the Academic Commercial version and $1000 per year for the Academic Professional version. EES (pronounced 'ease') is an acronym for Engineering Equation Solver. The basic function provided by EES is the solution of a set of algebraic equations. EES can efficiently solve hundreds of coupled non-linear algebraic equations. EES can also be used to solve initial value differential equations.

Equation

A major difference between EES and existing equation solving programs is the many built-in mathematical and thermophysical property functions which EES provides. For example, the steam tables are implemented such that any thermodynamic property can be obtained from a built-in function call in terms of any two other properties. Similar capability is provided many other fluids, e.g., ammonia, nitrogen, methane, propane, all common CFC refrigerants, R-134a and others. Air tables are built-in, as are psychrometric functions and JANAF table data for many common gases. Transport property functions are also provided. Thermophysical property functions operate in either SI and English units. Additional property data may be added by the user.

EES provides the capability to do parametric studies. Selected variables can be included in a spreadsheet-like table. The user determines which variables are independent by entering their values in the table cells. EES will solve the table to determine the values of all dependent variables. A plotting option is provided to display the relationship between any two variables in the table. Multiple plots can be overlayed. Publication quality plots can be output on Postscript - compatible printers.
