1. Power World Simulator Download

Power Systems have been one of my favorite subject in Electrical Engineering, maybe because my former professor in College is a Power System Enthusiast, and has a doctoral degree in Power Systems. He was very passionate with power systems, and being him as my thesis adviser also, he shown me how beautiful power systems are, and that how I can pursue power systems in my professional career.

Though right now power systems is not really my expertise, I am trying my best to learn everything about it, not just the theoretical side but also the application side of it. There is so much to learn about power systems, but for this blog post, I am introducing you to a tool which we started using during my power system journey in college.

PowerWorld Simulator. PowerWorld Simulator is an interactive power system simulation package designed to simulate high voltage power system operation on a time frame ranging from several minutes to several days. The software contains a highly effective power flow analysis package capable of efficiently solving systems of up to 100,000 buses. Using ETAP software in our electric power course provides students with a unique experience in analyzing real world electric system issues. They have a great opportunity to simulate and study issues common in industrial plants and electric utility systems with state-of-the-art software.

PowerWorld Simulator is an interactive simulator, which can help engineers simulate high voltage power system operation. It has a very robust power flow analysis which is capable of solving a power system up to 250,000 buses.

During our time in college, after we have discussed several topics in power systems, we always do some case studies in order to explain theoretical topics to actual applications. This tool has been a great tool to use and hone your knowledge with regards to power systems.

The tool is able to help you with your power flow analysis, and it has the following add-ons:

  • Fault Analysis
  • Available Transfer Capability (ATC)
  • Optimal Power Flow (OPF)
  • Security Constrained OPF
  • OPF Reserves
  • PV/QV Curve Tool
  • Transient Stability
  • Geomagnetically Induced Current

There is a free version of the tool, which you can download HERE, but can only simulate up to 13 buses. They also have the GSO version, which is the one used on the Power System Analysis and Design textbook by Glover, Overbye & Sarma which can solve a system up to around 40 buses.
